Introduction
Translation of the New Testament into Amharic (ET):
The New Testament of Ethiopia (NTE) was begun in 2006. It is the first full-scale translation of the New Testament into an Ethiopian language other than Tigrinya. It is a joint project of the Ethiopian Bible Society (EBS) and the Institute for Ethiopian Language Studies. It is the product of about 7 years' labour. About 20 people are involved in the translation and the Bible is being distributed now throughout Ethiopia. The first Bible translation into Amharic was done in 1886 in Germany. The work has been carried out with the support of the Ethiopia Evangelical Mission (EM) and the cooperative efforts of the Bible Society of Canada and the Institute for Ethiopian Language Studies, which have provided various linguistic tools.
Old Testament:
Before the translation, the Old Testament was available only in Tigrinya. The Bible Society (EBS) announced its intention to translate the Bible into Amharic at a workshop in Geneva in 2005. The workshop was attended by 12 students from the Bible Institute of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and a translator from Canada.
